Environmental Disasters and The End of the World
Environmental Disaster, End of the World Is the end of the world coming? According to many different cultures, including The Book of Revelation in Christianity, the world will succumb to burning up in a “lake of fire.” Could this be referring to a nuclear holocaust? Or is it simply about global warming? Or maybe it refers to spilled oil in the gulf catching on fire and destroying wildlife.

There is a lot of speculation that the end of the world could be caused by the warming of the earth. Global temperatures are rising and observations from the U.S. EPA suggest that Global temperatures have risen 00.8-1.0-F in the last century. The surface of the ocean has also been warming at a similar rate.

Studies that combine land and sea measurements have generally estimated that global temperatures have warmed up to between 0.5 – 1.0 F in the last century. About two-thirds of this warming took place between the turn of the century and 1940. Global temperatures declined slightly from the 1940’s through the 1970’s, but have risen more rapidly during the last 25 years than in the period before 1940.

Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have claimed that our sun may also fry us in the end. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic, and it's supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the Earth with so much radiation; it's been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This type of “solar flare” activity is predicted to get worse, and calculations suggest that this type of activity of reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012. The result would be mass cancers, destroyed crops, boiling oceans, and knocked out communications.

However, it is the Book of Revelation that has many doomsayers predicting the end of the world.

For instance, this quote - “For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.” (Matt. 24:7)

This most certainly sounds like the bird flu, starvation, and earthquakes that we have been experiencing in the past few years. An earthquake in “divers places” could easily mean a tsunami. Many Christians see this as proof that the end of the world is coming.

Jesus declared that earthquakes would be one of the outstanding signs of His Second Coming and God’s judgment upon this wicked world. Earthquakes are also part of the opening of the Seventh Seal in the Book of Revelation.

Imagine a scenario where the sun will be darkened, the moon will turn to blood, stars will fall from the heavens, and the sky will roll away like scroll. This actually sounds like a very poetic description of the many eclipses we have been having lately.

There has also been a lot of talk about super volcanoes, especially since the eruption of the Iceland volcano that is still surging ash into the air. A super volcano is the most destructive force on this planet. Only a few exist in the world and when they erupt, they do so with a force tens of thousands of times greater than other volcanic eruptions. They lie dormant for hundreds of thousands of years building up magma before finally they unleash their apocalyptic force. This type of force is capable of obliterating entire continents. They threaten the very survival of mankind.

Not all super volcanoes have been found, but one of the largest is in Yellowstone Park, USA. Scientists searching for the underground roots of the volcano in the park could not see it because it was so huge. It was only when satellite images were taken did the scale of the caldera (underground magma) beneath this volcano become evident. In fact, the entire park, 85km by 45km, is one massive reservoir of magma. The idyll landscape of Yellowstone could soon explode with devastating consequences.

Scientist have discovered that the ground in Yellowstone is 74cm higher than in was in 1923 - indicating a massive swelling underneath the park. The reservoir is filling with magma at an alarming rate. The volcano erupts with a near-clockwork cycle of every 600,000 years. The last eruption was more than 640,000 years ago - we are overdue for annihilation.

Immediately before the eruption, there would be large earthquakes in the Yellowstone region. The ground would swell further with most of Yellowstone being uplifted. One earthquake would finally break the layer of rock that holds the magma in - and all the pressure the Earth can build up in 640,000 years would be unleashed in a cataclysmic event.

The end of the world would indeed be imminent if the volcano below Yellowstone park finally blew. Magma would be flung hundreds of miles up into the atmosphere. Within a two thousand miles of this explosion virtually all life would be killed by falling ash, lava flows, and the sheer explosive force of the eruption. Volcanic ash would pollute places as far away as Iowa and the Gulf of Mexico. Enough lava would pour out of the volcano, enough to coat the whole of the USA with a layer 5 inches thick. The explosion would have a force 2,500 times that of Mount St. Helens. It would be the loudest noise heard by man for 75,000 years, the time of the last super volcano eruption. Within minutes of the eruption tens of thousands would be dead and mankind may very well become extinct – just like the dinosaurs.

The long-term effects would be even worse. The ash that would shoot into the atmosphere could block out light from the sun, making global temperatures plummet and the earth would plunge into an eternal winter. A large percentage of the world's plant life would be killed by the drop in temperature. Also, virtually the entire of the grain harvest of the Great Plains would disappear in hours, as it would be coated in ash. Similar effects around the world would cause massive food shortages. The Yellowstone super volcano eruption could truly be an extinction level event.
