How The Winter Solstice Will Affect You |
The Winter Solstice, also known as the Longest Night or Midwinter, occurs at the instant when the Sun's position in the sky is at its greatest angular distance on the other side of the equatorial plane. It also marks the shortest day of the year and also the day of the year when the days will start becoming longer instead of shorter. It typically happens every year between the 21st and the 23rd. In 2009, this happens on the 21st of December.
The solstice is important, as it has symbolically been celebrated as a festival for almost as long as man has been alive. In ancient times, cattle were slaughtered so they would not have to be fed during the winter. Cattle were slaughtered at this time and it was the only time of year that people actually ate meat. It is also the time of year when a lot of wine and beer made from crops harvested in the summer finally fermented and was ready to drink. So as a festival, this date is older than Christmas.
This winter solstice the sun will be in Sagittarius (as it is every solstice), which is a friendly and curious sign. Relationships with family and friends will go even more smoothly than usual. People will be in the mood to celebrate. Curiously, the moon will also be in the sign of the Archer on the day, which means that romantic pursuits may be very much a part of any celebration. It will be a great solstice for single people to meet a new romance.
Just the day before the solstice, Ceres, the asteroid that symbolizes a great hearth goddess, will go forward in the generous and cheery sign of Sagittarius, after spending months in the more restrained and prissy sign of Virgo. This should also turn even the most amateur of cooks into gourmet chefs, just in time for Christmas celebration. Wine, desserts, and invitations to parties should also be in great abundance on the 21st because of this. Many people will also be inspired to really decorate their homes around this time as well, but the decorations will be more ecologically minded than usual thanks to the influence of the earth loving energies symbolized by Ceres.
One challenge of this day may be Mars going retrograde in Leo. This can indicate a lack of energy. Some members of some signs might be feeling very fatigued. It could also mean that some people will be feeling sick from the flu.
Also during this time, the Moon, Jupiter, Chiron, and Neptune in Aquarius are opposing Pluto in Capricorn. This could cause conflict in relationships for some signs. Sibling rivalry or dealing with a family member’s addiction could be an issue.

Aries

Still you should be careful not to overindulge and get home from work early.
Taurus
Ceres, the asteroid of the Roman corn Goddess, is going to put you in the mood to cook and decorate your home on this solstice. To be earth friendly, use candles instead of electricity whenever possible. You may be invited to spend a special Solstice meal with a loving friend.
Gemini
Be prepared for the amorous advances of an earth sign or if you are already attached be prepared for wonderful night of flirting or love making. This is a wonderful night for you and a loved one to show off each other at a party. Singles are bound to meet someone new on this magical evening as well.
Cancer
You are inspired to go out and party, but if you do, the skies warn against being too flirtatious with someone who is not quite who he or she claims to be. Neptune, your ruling planet, is clashing with other planets in the sky and creating delusions and wishful thinking in your mind. You should also beware of a temptation to become inebriated at night.
Leo
Mars moving backwards in your sign could drain you of your confidence and energy. It is probably the best for you to stay home on this Solstice and share a special meal with someone that you care about deeply. This day may also inspire you to decorate your home for the holiday festivities.
Virgo
Ceres, the earth goddess, moves forward and inspires you to cook, clean, and decorate your home for the holiday. This is an excellent night for you to go out to a party and meet new people or have a few special friends over for dinner. You will have a great time, as long as you keep the party smaller rather than larger so your nerves are not strained. Mars retrograde in Leo could make you feel a little tired.
Libra
Planets in the happy-go-lucky sign of Sagittarius have you feeling grateful to be alive. The universe will respond to your good mood by offering you lots of parties to go to this evening. The only threat to your enjoyment on this evening is a bizarre placement of Neptune in the sky, which warns heavily against accidents due to drunk driving. So if you are inebriated, don’t get into your car.
Scorpio
