Friday The 13th
Friday The 13th Psychic Sylvia Browne, World-renowned Psychic Sylvia Browne pictures Are you afraid of Friday the 13th? There is a name for that. According to The Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 21 million people in the U.S. are affected by this phobia. They avoid taking airplanes, going to work, or even getting out of bed.

By the way, there have been no studies done to confirm that there are any more plane crashes occurring on that day than others.

It seems that the first mention of Friday 13th being an unlucky day goes back to the 19th century. The earliest known mention of it occurs in an 1869 text about the Italian composer Giochino Rossino, who considered Friday to be unlucky and the number 13 to be unlucky.

Then again, in 1907, a mystery writer named Thomas W. Lawson wrote a novel called “Friday the Thirteenth,” which brought fear of the date more into contemporary public mythology.

It does boil down to numerology. Twelve is considered a lucky number and that derives from the twelve Apostles of Jesus. The thirteenth apostle was actually Judas. A very popular superstition is that if you seat thirteen people at the same dinner table, one person will die before the end of the year.

Friday has been considered a lucky day for years. In The Canterbury Tales, which dates from the 14th century, Friday is mentioned as a day that is unlucky for starting projects or traveling. It has also been associated with stock market crashes and other disasters since the late 1800s.

It has also been suggested that Jesus was crucified on a Friday. Additionally, some theologians hold that Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden fruit on a Friday, and that the Great Flood began on a Friday. And it does not help the day’s reputation any more if you know that it was once the day favored by all medieval executioners for beheadings.

The superstition might also be rooted in mythology. Friday is named after Frigga, who is the goddess of love and fertility. When Christianity took over Northern Europe, this female deity was labeled a witch and banished to a mountaintop. It was believed that every Friday, to get revenge, the goddess got together with eleven other witches and the devil to plan wicked things for humans. In fact, for centuries, Friday was nicknamed The Witch’s Sabbath by Scandinavians. In fact, the root of the world Friday comes from Freya – the name of the good goddess turned evil.

A historical event may have also contributed to Friday’s reputation as being a day of bad luck. The Knights Templar was a monastic military order that was founded in Jerusalem in 118 C.E... The mission of these knights was to protect Christian pilgrims during the Crusades. Over the years the Templar Knights became very powerful and wealthy. King Philip of France became threatened by their power and ordered their mass murder on Friday, October 13, 1307.

In recent history, there have not been too many natural disasters striking on the Friday. On October 13, 2006, a storm called the Friday the 13th Storm devastated Buffalo, New York. In August 2004, Hurricane Charles hit the U.S. on a Friday causing some fifteen billion dollars in damages.

In the future, you may want to duck, as the asteroid 2004 MN4 will make a close encounter with the earth on Friday, April 13, 2029.

Not everyone considers Friday the 13th being an unlucky day. It is the ideal day to launch certain albums and movies. For instance, in 2009, the horror movie Resident Evil 5 is going to be released. Four of the 11 films in the Friday the 13th series were all released on Friday the 13th as well.

Is it morally right for you to fear Friday 13th? Not according to the religious authorities. The first Commandment contains a clear message not to put strange gods before you. In other words, don’t give the date the power. Give God the power. In fact, there are some religious personalities that saw the number as a bit luckier. St. Augustine recommended saying a prayer thirteen times if you wanted the request in it to be granted by God.

Treat every day as if it were your last, and don't read to much into numbers. Even so many have had bad events on a Friday the 13th, my heart goes out to those...and congrats to those who have been lucky on that day...Donna

I personal don't like Friday the 13th, cause I had bad luck on that day. My mom died on that day. I was only 14 years old. My life has gone down hill since then...

My name is Rose, born Friday 13, 1950. Most of my 7 children are born Friday 13 or 31---2 missed by minutes or hrs. Noticed & discovered seueral yrs ago that I am surrounded mostly by 13 in all aspects of life, people, good or bad. This started me thinking & began asking---found they were born on Friday 13 or had the # associated somewhere. This really is ironic or coincedent. Even today it is true. So I accept this good or bad.

In this article it says no plane crashes on Friday 13th, today 2-13-09 there was a plane crash and killed 50 people. I too believe it has no association with the date. When it is time to go home, then we go no matter what the date. One man missed getting on the plane, his time was not today.A widow going to celebrate her dead husband's, killed in 9-11, birthday is now home with him. Many times you hear this has happened.

I consider Friday the 13th as just another day. It is special to me, as I was born on Friday 13, l931 (13 in 31). It was a very stormy day and my mother was heavily traumatized. We were both given 18 hours at the most for survival. The doctors asked my father which one to work on as the problem was so grave thaty couldn't help us both. Dad naturally said my mother. So I came though basically, on my own. I know God had his hands on both of us as we both made it. I have been a fighter all my life and find nothing strange about the date. It so happens that 13 is my 'lucky number' if there is such a thing. I always tell people that Friday the 13th is a 'lucky' or good day for everyone if they let it be. Everything happens for a reason whatever the circumstance! It's all up to God and we must trust in him!! Remember, 13 is no different from 12 or 14!!!!

I like Friday the 13th. It's a day where some people think some bad things will happen...so I just sit back and watch when they make a good day into a bad one for themself. I have good luck on this day...the day is what you make of it ....so may luck be with all.

I love Friday the 13th. I was born on Thursday the 13th. Rats....missed by a day!! Every day, regardless of positioning or date, is exactly how one makes it. Even seemingly negative challenges can be given a positive swing by observing its effect. I say....enjoy the day! If its cloudy, know that the sun is brightly shining behind those clouds. And this same knowledge is easily applied to all seemingly cloudy issues. Have awesome days everyone! Stephanie

Friday the 13th has been a good day for me usually. I get to see Sylvia Brown on Friday the 13th in March at the Soaring Eagle Casino, so that will be another good day for me! Maybe I'll get lucky with a question!

I was actually born on a Friday the 13th and usually all the Friday the 13th's have been good days. They are what you make them.

I agree it is up to God if something bad was to happen on Friday the 13th.
