Hereafter: The Review |
Clint Eastwood stepped away from his usual work and tackled the timely subject matter of life after death in his directorial film, The Hereafter.
Hereafter is a character drama that addresses the age old mystery of, “What happens to us after we take our last breathe?”
The film has three story lines occurring simultaneously which move separately from the United States to France to England. After weaving the storylines they successfully come together at the end.
Matt Damon is George Lonegan, a psychic medium, who feels his talents are a curse and is running as far from them as possible. George decides to work at an unfulfilling job where he can fly under the radar. In spite of his brother’s continuous attempts to capitalize on his talents George holds his ground. His, one time, fame brought him pain and anguish. He wants nothing more than a typical life. George makes a feeble attempt at a typical life with Melanie (Bryce Dallas Howard) but predictably his psychic abilities prove to get in the way.
The film begins with catastrophic Tsunami tearing through a resort town where a well-known investigative reporter, Marie Lelay (Cecile de France) is vacationing with her boyfriend. She is swept up in the Tsunami and is hit bluntly on the head and becomes lifeless. After several revival attempts the villagers write her off for dead. Within minutes she chokes up water and is alive. However, she experienced something that she has no frame of reference for. She is left confused and feeling alone with her near death experience.
The third storyline addresses a very moving loss for Marcus (Frankie/George Mclaren) a young boy who is left to pick up the pieces after a loved one dies. This plot covers the dark subject matters of deep loss, drug addiction, dysfunction and the meaning of life.
This film shows how one life altering event, not necessarily death, can cause such a huge shift in life that a person can be brought into a new life never expected. The lesson of facing loss and tragedy while learning to move forward strongly ruminates throughout the film.
As a seeker who has spent many years studying the topic of life after death I was disappointed. The storylines takes a long time to develop and never squarely lands on life after death. My suggestion is to go to this film without expectations. It is my opinion that the movie trailers are misleading. This is a movie much more about the characters and their struggles.
If you are looking to watch movie about the hereafter I would not choose this one. If you have 129 minutes and want to watch a character drama you may enjoy this film.
