How To Make Your Own Fortune Cookies
How to Make Your Own Fortune Cookies Psychic Sylvia Browne, World-renowned Psychic Sylvia Browne pictures Have you ever wanted to make your own personalized fortune cookies? Think of what a great gift this type of fortune cookie would make at a shower, birthday party, or wedding celebration. Making your own fortune cookies is also a fun way to entertain dinner guests after a meal, especially if you do not make them sound too conventional.

Your first challenge is to decide what kind of fortunes you are going to put inside. You can make fortunes up or you can start writing out all of the fortune meanings that you find as Tarot card or I-Ching meanings. You can also choose a topic that is popular such as love, get onto the internet to find words of wisdom, and put the “quote” inside the fortune. However, to have the most fun it is a nice idea to think up humorous ones; secret messages or strange commands (such as “steal something from the person’s plate to your immediate right”) can also be a lot of fun.

Ideas for fake fortune messages that you can put in fortune cookies are:

You are SO going to get it when you get home

Whatever you do, do NOT leave this house

You owe $0.25 for eating this fortune cookie

The person sitting two seats away from you to your left has a crush on you

Today a small child is going to mess up your future

Leave a good tip or misfortune will strike you!

What do you think I am – a mind reader?

You need a trip to the hairdressers!

Make a list of these fortune-telling sayings and then decide on a way to put them on small pieces of paper. You can either make your own fortunes and write the fortunes in elegant script with a pen, or you can type them in a very small font (such as Calibri 10 or Times New Roman 12) and then print the fortunes out and cut them into slips of paper. These slips of paper are going to end up inside the fortune cookies.

Now, onto how to make your own fortune cookie in your kitchen. Have you ever wondered how those fortunes get inside the fortune cookies? Now you are going to learn...first of all assemble all of the ingredients needed for your fortune cookies including:

1 egg white
1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract or almond extract
1 pinch of salt
1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1/4 cup white sugar

You will also need a whisk or electric mixer, a flour sifter, spatula, and a clean wooden cutting board on which to work. It is also a good idea to have an empty egg carton or muffin tin on hand.

To make the fortunes cookies, preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Separate the egg white from the yolk, and discard yolk. Using a whisk or electric mixer, mix egg white and vanilla until foamy. Don’t over mix, or it will become stiff and hard to work with! Sift the flour, salt and sugar together, then blend it into the egg white mixture.

Make sure your cookie sheets are well buttered or oiled.  Place small spoonfuls of the batter at least 4 inches apart on cookie sheets. It is very important that the batter poured on the baking sheet is in a round shape because you are going to have to fold this over later when you handle the freshly baked cookie to create a “cave” in the dough for the fortune to live in.

If necessary, tilt the cookie sheet to move the batter into round shapes about three inches in diameter. Make the batter as round and even as possible before baking. Do not make too many — cookies must be warm to form them. When they cool, it is too late. Start with 2 or 3 on each sheet until you get the hang of how to do this or you might end up wasting quite a bit of batter.

Bake each pan of cookies for about 5 minutes. The cookies should turn a golden color around the edges when they are ready. The center will remain pale. Remove from oven, and quickly flip the hot cookies upside down onto a wooden cutting board with a wide spatula.

Place the fortune on the cookie, close to the center. Fold the cookie in half, then place the folded edge across the rim of a measuring cup or mug. Pull the pointed edges down gently, one inside the cup and one outside. Remember that fortune cookies have a bit of a pinched look in the center. It helps to refer to a picture of a typical fortune cookie when you are making them.

You can pinch the edges of the circle complete shut to make the fortune inside the dough a bit more of a mystery, but you don’t have to. Some people simply prefer to make a looser more open fortune cookie and then slip in the fortunes afterward. The choice is up to you.

After you are done molding them, be sure to place folded cookies into the cups of a muffin tin or empty egg carton so they will hold their shape. Let the cookies sit for a while so that they can set and harden.

Remember you do not have to put fortunes inside fortune cookies. You can also put personal messages, clues to where something might be hidden, and pieces of paper that feature miniature works of art of doodles.
