If you are thinking of taking a vacation in the next few months, why not go somewhere that is a special spiritual destination? There are many traditional places in the world that generations have been going to find themselves and also find God.
Here are the top ten spiritual places in the world to visit.
1. The Ganges River in Varanasi, India is considered the holiest place in the Hindu world and many have their body burned along the river banks. Ashrams and yoga schools are common throughout the northern Indian city. If you are trying to face your own mortality and find yourself, then this is the place to go.
2. Rishikesh, India is a favorite destination of spiritual seekers. It is where the Beatles went to find enlightenment when they went to meet the Maharishi in the sixties. Despite the fact that the Beatles later denounced him, there are many beautiful aspects of the Ashram culture that can be enjoyed. The retreat is right next door to the Himalayan Mountains, so the view is absolutely breath-taking as well. It is a wonderful place to go and learn meditation; especially if you are interested in vegetarianism and Buddhism.
3. If you are Christian, you may enjoy following in the Footsteps of Jesus in Israel. There are several tours in Israel that take you to all of the places that played a story in the life of Jesus, including Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Church of the Nativity.
4. Christian seekers also often flock to Lourdes, France. There is a small grotto here in which a vision of the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to three children in 1858. This is a place where many people have been spontaneously healed of illnesses while mass is being said. Drinking water from the Lourdes Spring is also supposed to be curative. A very good movie called “The Song of Bernadette” was made about Lourdes in the 1950s.
5. If you love the ancients and also the concept that aliens may have planted us humans here on earth, then a trip to the Egyptian pyramids might be in order. It is absolutely staggering to see the miracle of these giant structures and wonder how they were constructed so many miles away from rock quarries. Keep in mind too that Egypt is the center of culture and civilization as well.
6. Feel like going on a vision quest, but with a bit of pampering thrown in. In Temezcal, Mexico, there are sweat lodges and yoga retreats that are run by shamans. A famous one is the May Spa Wellness Center, which is located very close to the Mayan jungle ruins.
7. The Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica is a magical place where you can connect with Gods and animals. The place is abundant with friendly wildlife and beautiful vegetation. There are many thermal springs you can relax in, especially in the posh resort area of Tabacon.
8. Every Muslim is expected to make a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia at some point in his or her life. Inside Mecca is the holiest shrine in Islam. The cup-shaped sacred Mosque is a place of ancient worship and is also the location of the annual Hajj.
9. One of the holiest places in the world whose name is practically synonymous with religious trips is the Sacred Valley of Peru. This is the heart of Inca culture and the mysteries of the ancient mountaintop city of Machu Picchu.
10. In Stonehenge, England, there is a circular collection stones eight miles north of Salisbury that are 5,000 years old and nowhere near a quarry. There has been endless speculation as to how those stones got there; of course, one of the biggest theories is that they were put there by aliens.
If you can’t manage international travel, there are many places in the United States that are considered to be quite spiritual as well.
For instance, the Esalen Institute in California at Big Sur has been a big retreat for those how have wanted to learn about yoga, meditation, and tantric sex. Also in Desert Hot Springs, California, you will find hundreds of spas and retreats that offer yoga, spa treatments, and meditation. If you feel you need a bit of hard labor to straighten you out and also pay your way, you can go to the Green Gulch Farm Zen Center in California and work in the gardens of the Green Dragon Temple in San Francisico in return for some personal enlightenment.
A famous retreat in the United States is the Shoshoni Yoga Retreat in Colorado, which has a funky natural vibe and specializes in vegetarian cooking, hatha yoga, and meditation sessions.
