Animal Totems

Animal Totems speak to humans much like Guardian Angels and Spirit Guides. Many people connect very strongly to animals and their energy while others find it impossible.

Animal Totems are usually associated to Northern American Indians but most cultures have them. Much like Spirit Guides we usually have one Totem that stays with us for our lifetime but others come in and out. There are cultures that believe we have as many as nine totems with us at all time.

Animal Totems help to remind us that we not only live on the Earth but we are part of the Earth. Humans, animals, and the Earth are all made from energy. We are interconnected and work together.

The twelve months of the Zodiac are each represented by animals. You may connect with the animal that your birth month is associated with. That animal is not necessarily your actual Totem. Some beliefs are your animal Totem is decided by your birth date, the Zodiac, or something completely different.

Certain animals have specific meanings:

1. Beaver: Hard working, creative, loyal.
2. Cougar: Leadership, clarity and strength.
3. Deer: Intuition, hidden strength, compassion.
4. Eagle: Fearlessness, perception, and spiritual knowledge.
5. Lion: Authority, wisdom, and patience.
6. Rat: Success, wealth and foresight.

You can sit quietly and ask to meet your Totem. Many people use drumming music and meditation. Focus your mind’s eye and see what Totem comes to you. Is there an animal you already connect with? Do you notice that animals are trying to get a message to you? Does a specific animal always seem to pop up either in person, on TV or in books?

Animals are far wiser than you may think. They are here to help us in this Earthly lifetime.

 Anyone who has shared their life with any non-human animal knows how intelligent, and intuitive, they can be. Just as with humans, some animals are smarter than others. But if you've shared most of your life with any four-leggedy beasty, really observed them, you know they are capable of so much more than most people realize, including abstract thought! In terms of an animal totem, I can't say for sure what mine might be. Certainly not the lion, my zodiac animal, although I do possess some of the less-than-noble qualities of the male lion. Apart from domestic cats, and I can't imagine not sharing my life with them, I'm most drawn to elephants. While not native to North America, I can't see why the elephant can't be my totem. I'll have to meditate on that.
