Sacred Places: Oregon Vortex
by Carla Blaha

This is really cool. The Oregon Vortex is a road side attraction in Gold Hill, Oregon, stop by if you ever find yourself there.

The Oregon Vortex is a natural optical illusion. The story goes like this; there was a building built by a mining company in 1904 at this site. The building slid off of its’ foundation and landed at an unusual angle. This is now referred to as the House of Mystery.

What started to happen next is the strange part. Horses would either stop dead in their tracks and refuse pass it or begin to get agitated. The riders would have trouble staying on their horses. This raised suspicion and became known as forbidden ground.

The mystery continued. Perceptual phenomena began to occur, especially on film. When tourists would take photographs at the site they began to notice that the height of the people in the photograph changed, depending where they were standing. The photographs depicted that no one could stand erect in any photograph, when they were facing north.  The photographer would take one pictures with two people standing facing one another. Then, take a second picture and have the people which positions. The one facing the north never looked erect which would make them appear much shorter.

The cause: There have been many different scientific studies performed on this site. It seems that there is a Vortex on this site. A Vortex is a whirl pool which can be made of air, water, or energy. In this case, 1/2 is below ground the other 1/2 is above the ground. Phenomena are vulnerable to controversy. However, in this case there is no disputing what happens in the pictures. Why it happens is or is not a mystery to some.
